DLS Chronology

DLS’ history started in the sixties and early seventies. Roodenburg BV in Dordrecht was distributor for Detroit Diesel engines, while Baan Hofman Diesels was distributor for Allison automatic transmissions. Both brands were represented in the American company Detroit Diesel Allison, part of the industry giant General Motors.

Both companies were basically competitors as both delivered and maintained Detroit Diesel engines and Allison transmissions. Later on, in the seventies, Baan Hofman Diesel became sales and maintenance leader of Allison products at home and abroad. At that time, the Allison automatic transmission was widely used in city and intercity buses throughout the country. As a result, the service department for Allison transmissions thrived as never before. However, the reliability of the transmission was bad and this quickly led to a phase-out of Allison products in public transport. As a result, the entire business of Baan Hofman Diesels came under pressure, eventually leading to the acquisition of BH Diesels by Roodenburg BV in 1990.

In the nineties, the Allison share grew again, due to the philosophy of Allison Transmission, which first introduced us to Floor Trucks & Trailers and then delegated the Terberg Benschop account to Roodenburg. In the late 1980s, Detroit Diesel became independent, but Allison Transmission continued to operate under the GM flag. Because in the nineties Terberg Benschop developed as a large producer of port tractors such as Yard Tractors and Terminal Tractors, Roodenburg BV was able to prove itself as a supplier and partner in the field of Allison transmission. Another important factor was the development of computer-controlled Allison World Transmission, which proved itself to be a technically advanced but also extremely reliable automatic transmission.

In mid-1997, fast developments led to the setting up of Drive Line Systems, that specifically focused on Allison transmissions. A milestone is the delivery of the 35 E-One Crashtenders drivetrain for Schiphol and the Air Force. A consequence of this was that Cushman Power Dividers also belonged to our delivery range Today, not only is DLS engaged in Allison transmissions, but has also become a major player in the Power Take Off market by becoming official Distributor for Parker Chelsea. In mid-2018 Drive Line Systems is an established name in the field of power transmission technology at home and abroad. This name is based on the long experience and knowledge that the company has built up over time.
