DLS Transmission Solutions At Dakar Preprologue
Drive Line Systems BV (DLS), specialized in heavy-duty drive line systems and exclusive distributor of Allison Transmission in the Benelux and Turkey, is closely involved in the Dakar rally. This rally is known as one of the toughest races in the world.
In 2015 we started supplying a fully automatic Allison transmission for the rally in Buenos Aires in the Ginaf truck of Wuf van Ginkel. Thanks to the good performance of this Allison transmission, around 7 teams have now been equipped with an optimized heavy-duty transmission from Allison. And with that a lot of rally success has been achieved!
The fully automatic Allison transmissions, together with technical support for the Allison Transmission, have been provided by DLS with the specially developed rally software, which incorporates all kinds of features and algorithms that have more than proven their added value under the extreme conditions of Dakar. The proven indestructible Allison technology in combination with automatic gearshifting without power interruption has greatly improved the performance of the rally cars. In addition, the driver can now concentrate fully on the terrain and steering and the automatic Allison transmission ensures that power is available at all times. In addition to the ability to accelerate, there is a second advantage in using the Allison transmission with retarder. By using the retarder, the regular (disc) brakes are loaded less and there is less heat development. As a result, the tires have a longer service life and there is less chance of tire damage.
The success of the rally teams using the Allison transmissions has grown enormously in recent years: in 2019, 3 teams with an Allison transmission supplied by DLS finished in the top 5 (first, third and fourth place) and a total of 5 teams in the top 10.
In 2020 these teams will again make an effort with our solutions to end up at the top and not to get stranded. The robust drive solution with the Allison transmission is seen by the teams as a crucial success factor.
